This 6-hour workshop equips new MSW graduates with the knowledge and confidence to select a clinical supervisor who supports their professional growth and aligns with their values. Participants will explore the purpose and responsibilities of clinical licensure, review supervision models and agreements, and learn how to assess supervisor fit, ethics, and cultural responsiveness. The course covers fee structures, documentation, and hour tracking, as well as troubleshooting common supervision challenges. Through interactive discussions and experiential exercises, participants will develop practical tools for effective participation in supervision and build a foundation for ethical, empowered, and intentional clinical practice.
Upon concluding this course, fully engaged participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose, process, and ethical responsibilities of clinical licensure in social work, including motivations for pursuing advanced licensure and an overview of BHEC requirements.
- Differentiate between supervision models and settings (on-the-job, external, group, individual, hybrid) and identify the advantages and limitations of each for new clinicians.
- Identify key characteristics of effective supervisors and supervision relationships, including population fit, specializations, teaching styles, and cultural responsiveness.
- Evaluate supervision logistics and ethics, including fee structures, supervision agreements, policies for illness or emergencies, and the ethical handling of rescheduling or termination.
- Recognize the hallmarks of effective versus ineffective supervision, including appropriate boundaries, feedback practices, supervisor liability, and how supervision prepares clinicians beyond test preparation.
- Apply practical tools for participation in supervision, including a structured case staffing outline, supervision hour tracking, and strategies for professional documentation.
- Address common challenges in supervision, such as conflicting administrative and clinical guidance, remediation processes, and navigating power differentials and ethical dilemmas.
- Develop strategies for professional growth and accountability, including how to locate supervisors, review disciplinary histories, build a supportive network beyond supervision, and engage in culturally aware, ethical decision-making.
