Sleep complaints are common in mental health care. Most therapists recommend sleep hygiene or refer for a sleep study, both of which are appropriate in some cases and profoundly unhelpful in others. This presentation will educate clinicians about the biology of sleep, highlight factors that interfere with sleep, and give an overview of sleep disorders and how they can be managed behaviorally. Participants will walk away with a solid foundation of knowledge from which to assess and make appropriate recommendations for their clients with sleep complaints.

Objectives

Participants who complete this course will be able to:

  • Explain the 2-process model and how each process impacts sleep.
  • Give a brief overview of normal sleep architecture.
  • Articulate the proper place of sleep hygiene advice in working with sleep complaints.
  • Summarize major sleep disorders and their treatments.
